When a wealthy white couple returns to New Orleans after being stranded in
space for 20 years, they discover their beloved Garden District has
transformed into a prosperous Black metropolis, forcing them to confront
their privileges and prejudices while uncovering a mysterious resistance
movement led by the neighborhood candy lady.
Through a science fiction lens, "Chocolate State" follows the Brussards, a
privileged white couple who return from a botched SpaceX mission in 2045 to
find their Garden District world completely transformed.
In this alternate future, New Orleans has become a thriving Black metropolis
complete With renamed streets, an expanded Xavier University, and their
former mansion now occupied by Miss Brenda, a seemingly
benign candy lady with mysterious motives.
As they struggle to navigate their new status
as the marginalized group, they discover a
resistance movement that forces them to
confront their own prejudices about
power, Privilege, and progress.
The series uses its futuristic setting
to examine contemporary social issues,
particularly the fear of demographic and
cultural change among privileged groups,
while exploring questions of ownership,
belonging, and the true meaning of progress
in American society.
