IT GOES DOWN
IN THE DJ
WWhen a successful New Orleans musician returns home from South Africa with
his white South African girlfriend for a traditional Neighborhood DJ (block
party), cultural misunderstandings and family expectations collide, forcing
everyone to examine the true meaning of authenticity, belonging, and love.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of a New Orleans neighborhood block party,
this series follows Xavier, a successful musician, as he navigates the
cultural clash created by bringing home Taylor, his well-meaning but
culturally tone-deaf South African girlfriend.
Through family dynamics, particularly with his formidable aunt
TD, the show explores the delicate balance between cultural
appreciation and appropriation. As Taylor's genuine but
misguided attempts to embrace Black culture create
mounting tensions, the series delves into questions
of authentic belonging, tough love, and the
evolution of tradition in modern America,
all while maintaining a balance of humor
and cultural commentary that speaks
to universal themes of family, love,
and identity.
